The truth behinds the world's lowest Covid-19 mortality rates in India

September 18, 2020
For months, India has been struggling to control the coronavirus pandemic with limited success. The country of 1.3 billion people has the second-highest number of cases globally (more than 4.4 million), and the third highest number of deaths (over 75,000), according to Johns Hopkins University -- and the outbreak shows no sign of abating.

Coronavirus Information

The COVID‑19 pandemic, also known as the coronavirus pandemic, is an ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2). The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared coronavirus is outbreak and the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020 and a pandemic on 11 March.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.

The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, most often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, and talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than travelling through air over long distances. Transmission may also occur through smaller droplets that are able to stay suspended in the air for longer periods of time. Less commonly, people may become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread is possible before symptoms appear, and from people who do not show symptoms.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by the following coronavirus tips:

  • Wash your hands often. Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Keep a safe distance from people who are coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when going out
  • Do not touch the eyes, nose or mouth.
  • When coughing or sneezing, use a tissue or bend your elbows to cover your nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are not feeling well.
  • See a doctor if you have a fever, cough and shortness of breath.
